Blu-ray Disc and DVD

A Blu-ray 50GB

The PlayStation 3 bed movies on Blu-ray. To enjoy the best quality on an HDTV, it is recommended to use an HDMI cable, sold separately. A TV or monitor HDCP is required [51]. A remote control is also available separately for easy navigation.

The Blu-ray are zoned according to the following geography:

Region A: USA, Canada, Japan and East Asia;
Region B: Europe, Africa and all other PAL territories;
Region C: China, Russia and the rest of the world.

The Blu-ray can read the different DVD formats. This aspect makes migration more attractive to users because they do not have to replace their DVD collection. The console raises the definition DVDs to 1080p, improving their record on HDTVs.

Another advantage of the PlayStation 3 is its ability to read from the hard disk and HD video at 50i (50 interlaced frames per second), now full and without alteration of image quality from firmware v2.50 (15/10/2008). That makes an HD choice for videographers shooting in European format High Definition Video (HDV) and seeking an easy and flexible way to display their creations. In previous versions of the firmware, reading the 50i video was produced by a software conversion of 50i (input) to 60i (output), which caused a loss of definition and jerks in the rendering of videos.
